This is not just a theoretical consideration.
It is an urgent issue which most people do not recognise as such.
It is a common mistake to worry about the earth instead of our own existence on it as the latest species to arrise on it. We cannot really hurt the earth itself only our own habitat on it.
As a species, we are in "our evolutionary exam" phase undergoing "a cosmic intelligence test" (the quote marks indicate that the two phrases are subheadings in Peter Russell's book, The Global Brain---The Awakening Earth in a New Century).
???
Wha' the f..... huh? Can you please elaborate? In English this time.
:)
Not clear
I think I know what you're TRYING to say. I think you're talking about whether we can survive as a species without using what our minds have developed to our own destructive end.
Being self aware and able to foresee the unintended consequences of our actions, are we capable, for example of putting together a massive cooperative endeavor to stop and reverse the anthropomorphic climate change that our global industry has created?
Carl Sagan was famously concerned with mutual assured destruction. An elite few minds were able to stand on the shoulders of generations of elite minds before them and create an atomic bomb, but in the hands of world governments, or worse, individuals, would our complete obliteration be inevitable? He did not think so, and he was not alone. There is even a variable for it included in the famous Drake equation for how long an intelligent society can exist with the ability to transmit radio waves before it destroys itself.
Or, this might not be what janos is talking about at all.
Test?
So who is giving the test?
I dont know.
How I would regard human evolution is an interplay between memes and genes. I dont see a real selective pressure on our genes. So are we genetically drifting!? But as for memes, I feel there are many different selective pressures, especially in different cultures. I think the two best examples are Science and Religion memeplexes. They both fill a niche in our minds. Science makes good predictions and is useful as hell when we need to manipulate our environment to suit our needs. Religion is comforting! So they survive and replicate!
